Week 4: March 4th, 2025 - Longstitch Binding
This four week course meets once a week. It is designed to introduce the basic principles of bookbinding, familiarizing participants with the essential tools, materials, and habits they will need to explore other bindings and invent their own in the future. The course will cover a series of increasingly complex bindings, introducing new ideas with each new structure. Starting with the x-book, participants will learn pamphlet stitch, Japanese Stab Binding, and drum leaf binding, culminating in the production of a longstitch journal with a soft leather cover.
Participants will get a sense of how it feels to work in a communal space surrounded by others with similar interests. Participants will leave the class with a working knowledge of shop etiquette and bookbinding techniques and essential concepts, as well as a variety of blank handmade books to keep for themselves.
Additionally, participants are invited to attend Open Studio sessions (normally reserved for Studio Members) which occur between the first and last dates of this course. Access to Open Studio sessions can be purchased through the Classes page of our website.
