A monotype is a unique print, meaning it is one-of-one — you cannot get two identical prints from your monotype matrix. The word “monotype” can be used to describe unique prints made with any method or materials. Together with the assistance of an IS Projects collaborator, participants with any level of experience will be guided through the process of making a monotype. Because monotypes are not reproducible, they provide an excellent way for printmakers to experiment with things like color, layering, stencil, and found textures. They also lend themselves well to painterly marks made with brushes and other more experimental markmaking strategies. This has made monotype a very popular gateway to printmaking for folks who love to paint and draw.

We offer the following standard options for monotype classes:

• Etching Press: You will apply oil-based printmaking inks to a plexiglass plate, and pull your print using one of our two etching presses. This can optionally involve hand-cut stencils, found textures like leaves and lace, brushes, brayers, additive and subtractive markmaking, and can be done using multiple colors if desired (regardless of the number of layers involved.) When you see an artwork labeled “monotype” out in the world, this is very commonly the technique being used.

• Screenprinting: You will apply watercolor paints, water-soluble crayon, and watercolor pencil to the open mesh of a screen and pull your print with a squeegee. You can mask off areas of your image with tape and contact paper if desired, and by request, we could prepare a special shaped image area for you to create your image in (standard shape will be a rectangle). You can very easily work with multiple colors if desired, and can also very easily print multiple layers. Since this technique is water-based, it is easy to collage onto it, paint onto it, or collage it into other works.

Scheduling: We are a small and busy team, but we are as flexible as we can be! We typically schedule Private Instruction during our 11AM-7PM business hours, Tuesday-Friday. Weekend and after-hours appointments can sometimes be arranged, though. 

It is easiest to accommodate requests with at least 2 weeks advanced notice, but we can sometimes make it work short notice. After receiving your order, we will reach out to you via email to schedule your workshop.
